Eligibility to become an MOT tester

For eligibility to become an MOT tester, you must:

  • have 4 years’ experience working on the vehicle types to be tested
  • have a current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle classes you want to test
  • have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • be ‘of good repute’

To become a nominated tester for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 vehicles:

-You must also have an accepted level 3 qualification or accreditation.

Should you not have a Level 3 qualification or accreditation, we provide the IMI Light Vehicle Inspection Course. This level 3 course provides you with the necessary skills and qualification to be able to undertake your MOT Testing License.

For the Motorcycle MOT Testing qualification:

-You must meet the eligibility criteria mentioned above but NB: no previous qualifications are needed to become an motorbike MOT tester
