DVSA outlines plans for improved image capture & enhanced security measures to enhance MOT testing integrity

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is trialing new measures to combat fraud and error within the MOT testing process. A key focus is the introduction of a new image capture system, designed to improve the security and accuracy of MOT tests.
The new system will require testers to capture a photograph of the entire vehicle within the testing bay using a phone or tablet. This image will be stored alongside the test record, providing a visual record of the vehicle tested and helping to prevent fraudulent activities such as “ghost MOTs” where tests are conducted on a different vehicle than the one presented for inspection.
How will it work?
The new prototype feature will prompt testers to take a photo of the vehicle in a testing bay, after entering the number plate or VIN. This will need to be done on a phone or a tablet.
MTS will give prompts on how to capture the photo and once accepted it’ll be saved against the record. Testers will then be able to continue with the rest of the MOT as normal. It will not be possible to upload images stored on devices before or after the test.
Keeping your MTS account secure
Alongside the image capture initiative, the DVSA is emphasising the importance of cybersecurity for MOT testers. Measures to enhance account security include:
Strong passwords: Using unique and complex passwords for MTS accounts, avoiding easily guessable information.
Two-factor authentication: Enabling two-factor authentication for added security when logging into the MTS system.
Phishing awareness: Being vigilant of phishing emails and avoiding clicking on suspicious links or opening attachments.
Device security: Ensuring devices used for MTS access are properly secured with strong passwords and regular security updates.
By implementing these measures, the DVSA aims to create a more secure and robust MOT testing environment, ensuring the integrity of the system and the safety of road users. If you would like to take part in the trial and want to read the full publication, please click here.
